Is bottled water actually cleaner than tap?
Only one of the two is required to publish what it found. And in 2024, researchers counted the plastic.
Bottled water is not held to a higher standard than tap water, and in one measurable way it is worse: plastic. A 2024 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found an average of about 240,000 plastic particles per litre of bottled water, roughly nine tenths of them nanoplastics small enough that earlier methods never counted them. Whether that harms you is genuinely unsettled. That it is there is not.
Who regulates which
- Tap water is regulated by the EPA under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Your utility must test on a schedule and publish what it found every year. That published testing is where every number on this site comes from.
- Bottled water is regulated by the FDA as a packaged food. Its standards are required to be no less protective than the EPA's, but a bottler is not required to hand you its results the way a utility is.
That asymmetry is the part worth carrying around. It is not that bottled water is unregulated. It is that with tap water you can look, and for 58 local systems you can look right now.
The plastic finding, stated carefully
The 2024 PNAS study used a laser technique that resolves particles far smaller than previous work could see, which is why its numbers are so much larger than earlier estimates. Its headline figure was around 240,000 particles per litre, about 90% of them nanoplastics.
Earlier work had estimated that someone drinking only bottled water takes in roughly 90,000 microplastic particles a year, against about 4,000 for someone drinking only tap.
What none of that settles is harm. The FDA's position in 2024 was that current evidence does not demonstrate that the levels found in food pose a risk to human health. A separate 2024 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that people with micro or nanoplastics detected in the plaque of their carotid arteries had a substantially higher rate of heart attack, stroke or death over the following three years, which is an association in a specific patient group rather than proof that drinking bottled water causes it. Both of those things are true at the same time, and anyone telling you the question is closed is telling you something the evidence does not.
The cost, which is not close
Tap water in this region is delivered for a fraction of a cent per gallon. Bottled water at a typical supermarket price is on the order of a dollar per gallon or more, and far more in single-serve bottles. A household that switches its drinking water from bottled to filtered tap generally pays back a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system within a couple of years, and stops carrying cases from a car.
What actually helps, if the worry is real

- Not bottled water, unless you are on a well with a known problem or under a boil notice. Bottled solves a problem most public-system homes in this area do not have, while adding one measured in particles per litre.
The one honest case for bottled
Emergencies, boil-water notices, and a private well that has come back positive for something and has not been fixed yet. Those are real. If you are on a well, the testing schedule matters more than the bottle.
