First, what the number is measuring
"Hardness" is just the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water, minerals the water picked up traveling through rock and soil. It's reported two ways, and they mean the same thing:

To convert grains per gallon to ppm (mg/L), multiply by 17.1. To go the other way, divide. Here are the common values and the level each one falls into:

One thing to get out of the way up front: hardness is not a safety issue. Calcium and magnesium won't hurt you, they're the same minerals in a multivitamin. Hard water is a wear-and-tear problem: scale, spots, dull laundry, and a water heater that works harder than it should. (Want the published number for your utility? The hardness scale, find your number

The first real signs show up.

Maybe a faint spot on a glass now and then. Most people in this range never think about their water, and treatment usually isn't worth it.
What you'll notice: the first real signs.
Spots on dishes and glass shower doors, soap that takes more scrubbing to lather, a thin film on skin. Scale starts to form slowly inside the water heater and on fixtures. Much of the Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland suburbs lands in or near this band.
What you'll notice: it's now a daily nuisance.
Crusty white buildup on faucets and showerheads, cloudy dishes, stiff laundry, more soap and detergent to get the same result. The water heater is collecting scale on its element, which means higher bills and a shorter life. This is the band where a softener usually pays for itself.
What you'll notice: scale everywhere, fast.
Showerheads clog, fixtures pit and stain, appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, coffee maker, water heater) wear out years early, and dry skin and dull hair are constant. At this level, treating the water is less about comfort and more about protecting the equipment in your house.
Why a high number quietly costs you money
The nuisance stuff, spots, dry skin, stiff towels, is annoying but cheap. The expensive part is what you don't see:
So, how do I check mine?
Here's the catch with all those national maps and utility averages: they tell you what's typical for a region, not what's coming out of your tap. Two houses on the same street can read differently depending on the plumbing, a well, or a softener a previous owner left behind. The only way to know your real number is to test the water at your faucet.

Common questions
What's a "good" hardness number?
Under about 3 gpg (≈50 ppm) feels soft and rarely causes problems. From there up, it's a sliding scale of nuisance and wear, moderately hard (3.5–7) is when the first signs show, and 7+ is where a softener usually starts to pay for itself. There's no "unsafe" number; hardness is about wear and comfort, not health.
Is hard water bad for you to drink?
No. The calcium and magnesium are harmless, a small dietary plus, if anything. Some people don't love the taste, but it's not a safety concern. Safety is about contaminants like PFAS, nitrate, chromium-6, and lead, which are separate from hardness and aren't touched by a softener.
Can I just use a home test strip?
Strips give you a rough ballpark and are a fine first peek. They're easy to misread, though, and they don't tell you what it means for your specific water heater, pressure, or appliances. The free in-home checkup measures it properly and puts the number in context, no obligation either way.
If my number is high, do I have to buy a softener?

Is well water harder than city water?
Often, yes. Private wells draw straight from groundwater that's spent a long time in contact with rock, so they frequently read higher, and they can carry iron and other minerals a city plant would treat out. Well water also isn't covered by the utility report you'd look up by ZIP, which makes testing at your own tap the only way to know your number.
Does a water softener remove iron or rust stains?
A standard softener handles small amounts of dissolved (clear-water) iron along with the hardness, which is what causes a lot of orange staining. Heavier iron, or the rusty particles that settle out, usually need a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener. The hardness test tells us which situation you're in.
Does boiling water remove hardness?
Only partly, and only the "temporary" kind, boiling drops some calcium out as the scale you see in a kettle, but it doesn't soften the water you use throughout the house, and it actually concentrates what's left. Boiling is for killing germs, not for hardness. To actually lower the number you need a softener.
